Every two years people up and down the country get together to raise money for Red Nose Day. A British institution since 1988, Red Nose Day raises money for people living in difficult conditions throughout the UK and Africa. Bake sales, sponsored events and, of course, a night of great telly; Comic Relief spends the money raised on some incredible projects that tackle poverty and injustice.
There is a focus on a number of important issues in the run up to the big day, but the one that struck a chord with us was domestic violence. We were staggered to learn that police receive an average of 100 calls per hour relating to domestic violence, and up to 60% of women affected are pregnant.
Each week, two women are killed as a result of domestic violence.
In the UK, just £20 could pay for a night’s emergency accommodation and support for a family who’ve fled domestic violence.
There are loads of ways to fundraise, and in support of their campaign we will be giving away a £20 voucher to spend on our website.
All you have to do is take a photo of your fundraising effort and leave it as a comment on this blog, tweet us @hellobabydirect or post on our Facebook wall. We’ll donate £1 per entrant and pick a winner at 12pm on the 24th March.
Back in 2003, Comic Relief helped to set up the National Domestic Violence Helpline. If you have been affected by the issues raised in this blog post, you can contact them 24 hours a day on: (Freephone) 0808 2000 247.
